Bagels – Easy and Delicious

Bagels – Easy and Delicious

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Our family loves bagels! And why not? We love them toasted with cream cheese, we love them baked with meat, or just veggies and cheese, we love them as they are. Every Saturday, I wake up early and go to the store for some freshly baked bagels for our family. So now you know that we love bagels 🙂 Several years ago, I received a book as a gift, and my son found a recipe for bagels inside. Now, we have a mission: homemade bagels. I can tell you for sure that there is a huge difference in taste. They were easy to make and absolutely delicious on their own or with homemade butter.

It was a great experience and laugh of joy: my kids enjoyed making them. Let’s begin:

Bagels

~The recipe for Bagels ~

Ingredients:
3 cups white flour, plus extra for dusting
2 tsp salt
1 envelope active dry yeast(2.5 tsp)
1 tbsp lightly beaten egg
Scant 1 cup lukewarm water
Vegetable oil, for brushing
1 egg white
2 tbsp water
Toppings of your choice

Directions:
1. Sift the flour and salt together into a bowl and stir in the yeast. Make a well in the center, pour in the egg and water. Knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth.
2. Brush a bowl with oil. Shape the dough into a ball, place it in the bowl and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until the dough doubles in volume.
3. Brush a cookie sheet with oil and dust with flour.Turn the dough onto a lightly floured counter and punch it down. Knead for 2 minutes, then divide into 10 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and let it rest for 5 minutes. Gently flatten each ball and make a whole in the middle. Cover and let it rise for 20 minutes.

4. Preheat the oven to 425*F. Bring a pot with water to a boil. Reduce the heat until the water is barely simmering, then add 2 bagels. Poach for 1 minute, then turn them and poach for 30 seconds more. Remove with a slotted spoon and let them drain. Repeat with all the remaining bagels.
5. Transfer bagels to the cookie sheet. Beat the egg white with 2 tbsp of water and brush the bagels. Sprinkle with your choice toppings. Bake for 25 minutes, until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

That’s it, easy and delicious.
